5th Annual Gift Guide for Writers – 2017 Edition:
Most of my book sales do not come from friends and family. While it’s exciting to know I’m reaching thousands of strangers every year, a sale to somebody I know is even sweeter. Be a peach – buy their book and then leave a positive review on Amazon. If the book isn’t your cup of tea, buy it anyway and give it to someone or donate it to your local library. PURCHASING their book is a huge show of support — even if you never read it!
I know what it’s like when your inspiration wanes and you’re just feeling… stuck. These 15 authors bring you their best tips to finally write your book. Plus, the audios are short so they’re the perfect bite-sized bit of inspiration!
20% off through December 25, 2017.
Let’s get real here: we all get brainstorms in the shower. And jumping out of the hot water to write a note on the steamed-up mirror isn’t practical! The Aqua Notes notepad is the perfect solution to capture your next great water-induced idea.
I know of more than one author who loves to outline a book while in the tub – so make it easy with a bathtub caddie! This is far superior than just a board across the tub (um… yeah, that’s me!) and will easily hold your notes, pen, and drink!
Keeping with the theme of water-born ideas: the all-new Kindle Oasis. This is Kindle’s first-ever waterproof e-reader. According to Amazon.com, the Kindle Oasis is “IPX8 rated to protect against immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes. And it’s built to withstand getting splashed at the beach or dropped in the bathtub, hot tub, or pool.”
I found the Archie McPhee catalog years ago – and fell in love with the unique blend of gag gift and truly useful. These Shakespearean Insult Bandages are the wound binding of choice for curs, blackguards, scoundrels and wretches. Comes in a 3-3/4″ tall metal tin that is useful when all the bandages are put on papercuts!Best gifts for writers - 21 must-have items for Christmas 2017! #amwriting #giftguide Click To Tweet
You know I love literary inspired gifts – and this one is just too fun! These coasters look like typewriter keys AND the coaster holder is an adorable replica vintage-style typewriter.
Appearing on the list again: Coffee Joulies. Seriously… this would be what I want this year. New parents (and writers!) LIVE on coffee. But nothing is worse than when it’s stone-cold. *shudder*
Each polished stainless-steel shell is filled with an advanced phase change material that melts at 140°F. Put them in your coffee and they absorb heat when it is too hot, storing that energy inside. When your coffee reaches the perfect temperature, this stored heat is released to keep it there longer. The 5-Pack works with up to 20 oz of coffee, one bean per 4 oz.Writers love coffee! Here's a gift guide with both. Click To Tweet
Not all writers drink coffee! So for the tea-lover, they need a real, whistling tea kettle. And no, an electric tea kettle just doesn’t cut it – it’s almost as bad as microwaving water. *yuck*. This one is in sunny yellow and guaranteed to make mornings more cheerful! (Other lovely colors available as well!)
Nothing beats a sampler set when you want to branch out but don’t want to commit to an entire box! Be sure to offer a variety of strengths and caffeine/decaffeinated. (Ha! Who drinks DECAF?!) For tea, I’ve been enjoying Twinings lately. Coffee, I prefer something off the beaten path.
We all know that writers run on caffeine and… liquor! What better way to have your night cap than with a literary shot glass? Each 2 oz. shot glass features an illustration of the author along with a memorable quote about drinking. Makes a great gift for the book lover in your life too.
Anyone who has ever taken any of my courses knows I believe that we all need to include more story into our non-fiction writing. But merging the best elements of fiction into your non-fiction piece can be tricky. Especially when it comes to adding in emotion! This reference volume will help!
While every writer I know has an unhealthy love of office supplies, nearly all of them also have a tendency not to buy them for themselves. And sticky-notes are dead-useful for writers for everything from outlining to jotting down notes to taking phone messages. This pack has plenty of colors for anything you’d need!
I try to make buying gifts for writers as easy as possible – which is why so many of them are available through Amazon.com! What better gift for a writer than an Amazon gift card? And who knows… they could even use it on books!
I love magnetic poetry! And who doesn’t need a pick-me-up occasionally? You get 72 to tell someone they’re totally awesome. Not to mention all the cool phrases and ideas you can generate on your own!
I’m a big supporter of making sure your computer is healthy – and I recommend automatic, cloud-based backup software. Carbonite is easy, affordable, and is what I’ve used for years. This is a great gift to give yourself – or any computer-lover in your life.
P.S. Read about why I always back up my computer after having LOST an entire manuscript!
Created by one of my own clients, Alison, Sacred Summer is a unique essential oil blend that energizes, refreshes and uplifts while at the same time provides a sense of calm and relaxation. It’s perfect for those busy on-the-go days where stress is high and you need a pick-me-up.
You can get it at a 20% discount with the coupon code: SACRED20
If you’re using Alison’s essential oil or your own favorite, you’ll need a way to get it into your workspace. Essential oil diffusers are quiet, efficient, and can be beautiful! They’re a great way to inhale the beautiful scents of essential oils.
I thought long and hard about suggesting a blank journal for the writer in your life. Frankly, we all have something that is “the perfect journal” and I always get a little cranky when I get a journal that doesn’t match that ideal. That being said, I’ve known Leslie for years and have used her journals. They’re well-made, beautiful, and feel like a luxury for the writer in your life!
When you’re working on your mini-goal, sometimes having an audible timer throws you out of the creative process. A sand timer is silent – and you can glance up to see if you still need to be writing or if you’re good to stop. In my life (even before the kiddo) I want something durable over breakable so I’m all about the heavy-duty plastic!
These are all hand-knitted and come in a variety of patterns. Perfect for your mug that holds the good stuff – writer’s fuel. Aka: coffee! (As a special bonus, these are hand-made by my friend Kalpna!)
And for heaven’s sake… whatever you do buy, be sure to wrap it in this FREE, editable and printable word search gift wrap. Even if you hate DIY projects, this is just too cool to pass up!
