17 Unique Gift Ideas for Writers
Looking for a gift idea for writers? I’ve got you covered! Welcome to the sixth year where I scour the web looking for the best gifts for writers – no matter if they write fiction, non-fiction, bloggers, or just love the written word.
This list of gift ideas for writers is a labor of love! Gift ideas are always useful but to compile the list… it’s a lot of work. Still, I’ve got to say, I love researching and writing these gift ideas for writers each year!
I was just telling Ben yesterday, that THIS is my FAVORITE post to write each year. And since a couple of these gift have shown up in my stocking… I’m putting in a few personal requests.
To make your shopping a bit easier, just click on the name of the item to be taken directly to where you can purchase it! (It may or may not be an affiliate link, depending on what’s what!) At the time of publishing these gift ideas for writers, all the links work. But as the Internet changes, I can’t guarantee that they’ll all continue to work.

Paddywax Library Collection William Shakespeare Scented Soy Wax Candle
The Paddywax library collection of soy wax candles pays homage to the literary greats by pairing favorite quotes with exquisite fragrances. They offer a variety of literary greats, each with their unique candle blend.
Let It Be – Essential Oil Blend
Fellow author, Alison Brehme, (and one of my clients) created four aromatherapy blends that correspond to each season of the year using high-quality essential oils of either organic or wild-harvest ingredients. It’s time to awaken your senses and open your creativity. Breathe and Let It Be. Listen closely to remember who you are so you can soulfully connect and be present to what matters most in your life. Let It Be is a safe space to reduce the crazy, overwhelm, and stress. You’ll find daily practices, rituals and products to remind you of your power and to be grateful, even in dark times.
Let It Be artisanal oils are distilled in small batches using ethical and sustainable harvesting practices.
And, as a special offer to anybody who has found the 2018 list of gift ideas for writers, Alison is providing a 20% discount on your first order! Just use the coupon code KIM20.
Lava Rock Essential Oil Diffuser
I love essential oils but I HATE noisy diffusers. Mixing water and oil and electricity absolutely freaks me out. Not to mention, they DO make noise and can leave a spray of water on my desk. NOT what I’m looking for in my writing space. So THIS diffuser is a tiny bowl with lava stone beads. Perfect!
Cup Cozies
Hand-made by my friend Kalpna, these are perfect for your mug. And we all know that one of the best gift ideas for writers is caffeine! Kalpna offers cozies for tea OR coffee!
Gourmet Teas or Coffees
Nothing beats a sampler set when you want to branch out but don’t want to commit to an entire box! Be sure to offer a variety of strengths and caffeine/decaffeinated. (Ha! Who drinks DECAF?!) For tea, I’ve been enjoying Twinings lately. Coffee, I prefer something off the beaten path.
The Writer’s Map: An Atlas of Imaginary Lands
The Writer’s Map is an atlas of the journeys that our most creative storytellers have made throughout their lives. This magnificent collection encompasses not only the maps that appear in their books but also the many maps that have inspired them, the sketches that they used while writing, and others that simply sparked their curiosity.
Amid a cornucopia of 167 full-color images, we find here maps of the world as envisaged in medieval times, as well as maps of adventure, sci-fi and fantasy, nursery rhymes, literary classics, and collectible comics. An enchanting visual and verbal journey, The Writer’s Map will be irresistible for lovers of maps, literature, and memories—and anyone prone to flights of the imagination.
(Hint: I would LOVE this book!)
Shakespearean Lip Balm Set
Archie McPhee does it again! I always find the most unique items that are great gift ideas for writers on their website. This year, I’m bringing you a three-piece set brings you Shakespeare, Hamlet, and Macbeth!
Tell a Story Writer’s Box
Don’t be fooled by this tool for the youngest writers! I am a big fan of inspiration generating tools that provide open-ended story starters – and some of the best writing ideas come from tools gear toward kids.
Hamster with a Pencil Rubber Stamp
I ordered some ADORABLE Thanksgiving-themed stamps from RubberHedgehog.com and I loved the quality AND how well they cleaned up. (If you’re a paid client of mine in 2018, watch your mailbox) so I’m thrilled to offer you this adorable stamp. As authors, we all have a love of office supplies and THIS is beyond the normal of paper clips and post-it notes. Spend a few minutes cruising their site for other goodies!
P.S. I LOVE it that the pencil has a #2 on it!
Library Card Socks
In years past, I recommended the literary scarf from the same company but these socks are just too cute! Made to look like an empty library card waiting for new readers, this cozy set of socks celebrates your most beloved titles and the ones you’ve yet to crack.
(See, I TOLD you I scour the Internet looking for the best gift ideas for writers!)
Fancy Bookends
ALL writers have a ton of books! But some fancy bookends will jazz up their bookshelves in no time. There are a million “How To” ideas on Pinterest for a DIY option (and a thoughtful gesture even if they have no ROOM for bookends) or you can easily search on Amazon. (I don’t own these blue agate bookends but Ben has some similar ones from his grandparents!)
Paperback Perfume
I’m NOT a perfume person AT ALL. (I can’t even do scented lotions!) And yet… this is too quirky and unique to pass up!
A trip to your favorite library or used bookstore. Sweet and lovely with just a touch of the musty smell of aged paper, Demeter’s Paperback harnesses that scent with a sprinkling of violets and a dash of tasteful potpourri.

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
This was gifted to me by my bestie (hi Jess!) and I promptly fell in love. Gilbert shares a lot of the ideas I had always held as truth about the power (and responsibility) of having an idea, being creative, and bringing forth amazing beauty in the world.
Julie & Julia on DVD
While this story SEEMS to be about cooking, this movie is really about the writing journeys of two women – separated by years but brought together by supportive husbands and a love of butter. (Seriously, what could be better!)
Or get the book! (Yes, I’ve read it!)
Donate to a Reading Program
What do you get for the author who has everything? You don’t! Instead, make a donation in their name to a reading program. This year, Ben and I will be donating to Make Way for Books to support their early literacy programs for underprivileged youth.
Book Embosser
My grandmother got me one of these years ago and at the time… I thought it was 100% hokey. But I was also only reading Scholastic paperbacks. Fast forward years later and I have a large collection of “keep forever” books and I find I LOVE embossing the title page.
